I am a 13-year-old girl attending Pyle Middle School. After a
clean-up of the Crescent Trail and Little Falls Parkway in Bethesda today, I
noticed that there were very few trash cans in the area. Walking on the
path, I saw a total of four trash cans. Three of these trash cans were at
the entrances to the trails. All of them were either full or overflowing.
Because I had nowhere to throw away my apple core, I realized that one of
the
reasons that the area is littered is because of the scarcity and overflowing
of trash cans. I understand that you probably are not responsible for
maintaining your trails. I have sent you this letter because I am unable to
contact anyone that can help. I request that you point me in the correct
direction of your maintanence crew in Bethesda. It would be a great help.
I
thank you for your time and effort and hope to hear from you soon. I hope
my
efforts make the Bethesda community a better place for all.

I'm from Ontario and I'm thinking about going on a little walk...maybe a week or so...around the end of April.
I don't know if you've ever hiked northern Ontario but at that time of year the blackflies prohibit one from being in the bush. So I'm thinking of heading south to avoid them. Do you get them in NY state? Alternatively, how about Pennsylvania? I would also be interested in trail recommendations for a loop in the thirty kilometer to forty kilometer range on an intermediate to difficult level. Thanks for your time and nice web page

My wife and I (late 40s) are looking for moderate trails for this
summer--perhaps a week of hiking in the Adirondacks. We are novices, doing
this on our own. We've read a few books, done some websearching. We need
direction for where to stay for a week (don't need a Holiday Inn, but won't
do
in a bedroll wither) & a central location, also a suggestion for 4 or 5 good
trails. We can take it from there. Any ideas? Books? Organizations? We're
both
busy professionals, can't do websearches forever! Thanks in advance.

Dear Ron:
I am the outdoor writer at the Democrat and Chronicle and am working on a
feature on Internet sites for Sunday's Outdoors page. I'd like to interview
you about your Web site. To wit:
When did you start up this site?
Why did you start it?
How do you think the Internet fits into outdoor planning?
What's your favorite site and why?
What makes a good site?
Give me a little background on you: Age, where you live, what you do for
a living, what sort of outdoor activities do you pursue (since your site is
a guide to NYState hiking trails, I presume you hike around NYState), any
interesting Internet stories you can share, or anything else you'd like to
let me know.

I hope you can help! My husband and I would like to start hiking with our
children (4 & 6) on local trails. We are have no background or information
on hiking and would like to be prepared so that it is a fun family
experiance that we all would like to do again. Can you please tell me the
basics and some free trails we can go to around the Caledonia area? Or
could you direct me in the right direction to find the information we need?
I would appreciate any and all that you can do!

I have a question concerning the shawangunk trail.
I have been tryining to get a hold of a topo map for the area that runs from
high point state park in New Jersey to around the Elinville area.
I have found maps for the Ellenville area north. Anyway I was wondering if
you hav any idea were I can get
a map set. I really appreciate it.
I live in Bayridge Brooklyn, New York, is there a walking/hiking club in my
area? Thank you.
I have been strugglin to find information, and thought maybe you could
lend me an ear for a second, or an eye as the case may be.
im trying too dig up what i can on the newly proposed 10 million dollar
ny budget
proposel for a new herritage trail. i read it in the paper last week,
under ny proposed budget plan. but keep finding dead ends, and too many
leads elsewhere.
a group of freinds and I (mostly horse trail guides and avide hikers,
and nature nut) wanted too get
in on possibly helping build the thing, maintaining it, or any of the
many aspects that are going to come out of this trail, for ten million
they can make one long trail.
if your interested, or perhaps could just help stear me in the right
direction, of who
actually controls where theses things are going and who the get too do
it, or when.
well i think you get the main idea. not that where really money
oreintated, more the adventure, but if theres money too be made in doing
what you love more than anything else, than what more could anyone ask
for. i live in a cabin, in the mountains up bye lake george and
champlain. I have too hike up and down too get to it. theres no other
access. but I love doing it. it only takes 10 minutes or so from the
bottom of the mountain, well coming down anyway. lol
(just too give you an idea, that im serios.)

friends to go skiing at Woods Valley. We are desparate to go hiking
somewhere..preferably a place where no hunting is allowed. Can you
please send me information on some hills or mountains nearby? So far I

Hello, I was wondering if there are any broucheres or phamplets of some kind
that show the perinton bike trails? I did visit the "Cresent Trail" web site
and saw the differant maps for each individual trail. I am looking for maybe
a
single map with multiple trails for a design project I am doing for school.
Please write back or send me information. Thanks

I'm moving to the Perinton area very soon and am very interested in finding
a house which is nearby the Crescent Trail. My family enjoys hiking and xc
skiing which appear to be available on the trails. In addition, we also
like mountain biking. I didn't see any reference to allowing mountain
biking on the trails, is mountain biking forbidden?
Can you also tell me what are the benefits of becoming a member of the
association?
Thanks very much,

I am a student fromm Southmont High School and we are going to make a
walking trail. I would like to know some about your walking trails. What
kind of foundation do you use so the people can walk on? What kind of
things did you put out around the trails to attract wild life. Thank you
for your time and I would appreciate a response from you. Thanks!

I was
wondering if you would be willing to also provide a link to the Friends of Webster Trails. We have converted 2 1/2 miles of the Hojack Line to a
multiuse trail. Our website is http://www.ggw.org/webstertrails.

Can you tell me how to get a book of maps with all NY State trails? In

I feel it is wrong that moutain bikes are totally banned on the crescent trial. I live in this town, literally next to the trail. I rode it responsibly
for years. Even considered parts of the trail mine by doing minor maintenance (picking up garbage, clearing small limbs, advising other
bikers not to be careless or irresponsible, etc.). Now I understand that parts may have been damaged due to irresponsible behavior of a few. Is
this cause to totally ban everyone from the trails. I don't ever remember hearing about any public forums or meetings about the future of
mountain bikes on the trails. Isn't town money used to maintain or develop the trails? Are all the trails on private land? Isn't the equipment
used to maintain the trails stored by the town? Do they maintain or buy the equipment? Are summer interns at the town used for some
maintenance projects. Are land owners who give access to their land given tax credits? Would the crescent trail consider ever lifting the
ban? Are you familiar with access laws concerning equal access to public lands via private lands, or equal access laws? Would the crescent
trail ever consider a ride by permit system like they use in California or Vermont? I really miss riding from my backdoor. I am not a club
joiner or an activist my work doesn't permit me to be one. But I would consider doing some ground work to help open a dialogue to open the
trails to mountain bikers.

I am looking for trails or info on hiking in Alleghany State Park in NY.
Mon, 9 Sep 1996 18:06:27 PDT
Your site is very well-organized and easy to read. You provide a great
deal of information and have some very nice graphics.
Our only suggestion would be to change the light grey background to a
different light color, perhaps white. However, it is certainly fine the
way it is, too. Thanks for asking us what we thought!

comment: I publish a series of books about hiking and traveling with your dog.
We have completed books on California, Arizona, Texas (due in Oct.)
and the Northwest is due out in early 1997.. The books are called
DOIN' CALIFORNIA WITH YOUR POOCH!, DOIN' ARIZONA... etc. We are
planning a New York book in the spring of 1997 and wonder if you
or your organization could help us gather information about hiking
trails in New York that allowed dogs.
We would appreciate any help you could offer.
