Descendants of James STANDFORD

First Generation

1. James STANDFORD *1,2,3,4 was born about 1781 in North Carolina.2,3,4,5

In the early census of Tennessee James STANFORD is listed as James STANDFORD however his children are listed with the name STANFORD.

According to Hale's "History of DeKalb County Tennessee" page 80

"Goshen, on Dismal Creek, was well known for its Methodist gatherings before and after the War. This can be said also for Bright Hill, near Smithville, Asbury, near Liberty, and the Camp ground at Smithville. Some of the old time ministers became popular because of their eccentricities as well as piety, among them : Mr. Wainwright, 'Uncle' Jakey Hearn, 'Uncle' Ike Woodward, 'Uncle' Joe Banks, Elisha Carr, James Stanford, Ben Turner, and Caleb Davis."

Same Book Page 146

"In the center of Dowelltown and on Mrs. White's land is the old Gray Cemetery, a popular burying place a half century ago. ....... Other's interred there are: Rev James Stanford....."

Same Book Page 219

Speaking of the Civil War in Dekalb County Tennessee during the Winter and Spring of 1863 and actions by Allison's Squadron of Cavalry (CSA).

"Mr. Burton added: 'When the picket guard reached the command north of Daniel Smith's, the boys were mounted, and a running fight occurred to Dry Creek bridge. Here Company C, under Capt. R.V. Wright, stopped and waited for the Federals, then fired when they came up, checking them for a short time. At the Stanford Home Company B, under Captain Reece, was left on the south side of the pike. His men, when the Federals approached, fired again, checking them the second time. Company A was left behind Asbury Church, and it held the enemy back till our company wagons, loaded with bacon, got well up Snow's Hill. The bacon was what we were fighting for. One of our men, Tom Coleman, was slightly wounded in the foot by a spent ball. In the skirmish at Dry Creek bridge Lieut. D. Brien's horse got away from him. He could not be caught, and, seeing the Federals would get the animal, Brien ordered the men to shoot him. At Stanford's place a good roan horse came into our lines and Lieutenant Brien got him.....'"

The Stanford place spoken about was the home of James Stanford and his family as they were the only Stanfords in DeKalb County according to the 1860 DeKalb County Census. The Stanfords listed in the 1860 Census lived in the Dry Creek area.

Another account of the skirmish is as follows;

Allison's Tennessee Cavalry Squadron was raised March 1862, at Alexandria, TN., by Col. R. D. Allison, John S. Reece, and Robert V. Wright. Col. Allison and John Reece had previously served with the 24th Tennessee Infantry but had been discharged due to their age.

The three companies that made up Allison's were mostly men from DeKalb Co. TN with a few from the surrounding counties. It was one of the few DeKalb units that actually fought in there home area. During the first half of 1863 it was involved in several small battles and skirmishes in and around Alexandria and Liberty.

While camped near Liberty, the squadron was warned of the approachment of Federal troops from west of town. A guard of ten men was sent to investigate and near Salem church a column of Yankees was spotted. The guards opened fire on the advancing Bluecoats and quickly raced back to camp to warn the rest of the men. The firing had warned the men in camp and they quickly saddled their horses and started the supply wagons toward Snow's Hill, a steep high ground that was easily defended by the often out-numbered Confederates. A running fight ensued. At Dry Creek bridge, Capt. Wright's Co. C. stopped and waited for the Federals. Once in sight they opened fire, stalling the Yankees for a bit, then riding on. Capt. Reece's Co. B. used the same tactic a little ways up the road at the Stanford home. At Ashbury Church, Co. A., was able to hold the enemy long enough for the supply wagons to make it up Snow's Hill. This fight involved over 1000 Federal troops and a total of 75 Confederate troops, with 8 Yankees killed and 1 Confederate wounded. Believing that Allison's Cavalry was the advanced guard of Gen. John Hunt Morgan's command, the Federals did not attempt to pursue the units up the steep ground.

In 1809 there appears a Jane STANFORD on the Salem Baptist Church Rolls. It is unknown who this may be or if she is related to James STANDFORD.

James STANFORD * and Mary (Polly) GRIFFIN * were married about 1810. In the 1820 Smith County, Tennessee Census James and Mary had 3 children under 10 years old. From this information I am assuming that the date of their marriage would be around 1810.

Mary (Polly) GRIFFIN * (daughter of Matthew GRIFFIN * and Elizabeth (Betsey) WILLIAMS *) was born in 1791 in Nash County, North Carolina.2,3,4,6,7 She died after 1870. James STANFORD * and Mary (Polly) GRIFFIN * had the following children:

According to Hale's "History of DeKalb County Tennessee" there was a Pvt. A. A. Stanford, of DeKalb County, serving with Captain Robert Cantrell's Company C. of the 23rd TN Infantry Regiment (Confederate States of America).

Company C, 23rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment

Capt. Robert Cantrell's company (C) recruited around Smithville, became part of the Twenty-third Regiment of Tennessee Confederate Infantry. its commander was later elected lieutenant colonel. G. W. Hicks was elected colonel and later Erastus D. Foster. Other promotions were of Lieuts. W. D. Rhinehardt, Lawson W. Lee, and A. P. Cantrell. The company saw service in Virginia and at Shiloh. After fighting at Perryville, Murfeesboro, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge, and going through the Georgia campaign, it was at Franklin and Nashville and surrendered in North Carolina. Capt. John C. New, of Cannon County, writes: "After the Twenty-third had served about twelve months, it was reorganized. At this time Captain Cantrell was elected lieutenant colonel, but soon resigned. Ras Foster was elected captain of the company, and after serving some time he left and carried many of his men with him. The company was consolidated with mine [17th Tennessee Infantry Regiment and the 23rd were consolidated on 23 Nov. 1863]. Zeb Lee was a member of the company and lost a leg at Chickamauga. His brother, Lieut. Lawson Lee, was killed." Colonel Cantrell was for several years a distinguished circuit judge of Tennessee, residing a Lebanon. As part of Cleburne's Brigade, the 23rd participated in the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862, with Lieutenant Colonel Neill in command of the regiment. In this engagement the brigade was reported as consisting of the 15th Arkansas, 6th Mississippi, 2nd (Bate's), 23rd, 24th, 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiments and the Watson Bauery. The 23rd reported 570 men engaged at Shiloh, but no record of casualties was found, although they must have been heavy, for on April 26 the regiment reported only 337 effectives. On this date Cleburne's Brigade consisted of the 15th Arkansas, 2nd, 23rd, 24th, 35th, and 48th Tennessee Infantry Regiments, plus two Arkansas Batteries. On May 23, Hardee reported that 13 men, whose homes were in Lawrence County, had deserted from the 23rd Regiment. The regiment originally had 10 companies, but was consolidated into eight companies after the Battle of Shiloh, with some changes in company letters, and still further changes in letters were made at the reorganization.

One Muster Card has him Captured at Fort Donelson and sent to Camp Douglas. This information is wrong because the 23rd did not fight at Fort Donnelson. The confusion must have come because those that were captured at Fort Donelson were also sent to Camp Douglas just prior to the Battle of Shilo.
