The purpose of a Marine Survey is to provide sufficient information regarding the condition and value of a vessel, its machinery and equipment to make an informed purchase decision. The survey includes a signed written report of the observations, recommendations and opinions as to the current market value and replacement cost of the vessel. Insurance underwriters and lenders making financial decisions can also rely upon this report.
Policy requires that boats undergoing surveys be hauled out for hull inspections if currently moored. A sea trial or test run is strongly recommended. The owner must operate the boat or the owners authorized agent so the surveyor can concentrate on the inspection at hand. If a sea trial is not requested and the owner or the owner’s authorized agents is present, operation of propulsion, auxiliary machinery and navigation/steering systems will be inspected in the static mode only.
Surveys are conducted in a thorough and professional manner with due care and diligence. No assurance can be made that every deficiency can or will be discovered nor will I inspect or report on systems I cannot observe. The facts as discovered and presented in the written report are not to be deemed a guarantee or warranty, either expressed or implied for the vessel, its machinery or equipment from the surveyor or his company. Only the manufacturer or seller can provide such a guarantee or warranty. All observations are strictly in the nature of opinion and may be subject to further qualifications.
Given today’s complicated marine systems, few surveyors can be considered experts in all matters. Qualified specialists should be consulted when circumstances dictate. Expert inspections of rigging, machinery and electrical systems, independent from the primary survey, may be in your best interest.
