the war years

Every little town all across the US was effected by WWII. Even the small little town of Ionia, NY. This webpage provides information on members of that community who served in the armed forces from letters, photographs, newspaper articles and mentions in "The Ionia News".

the ionia news

"The Ionia News" consisted of 13 issues, beginning in July of 1943 and ending in December of 1944. It was published by four Ionia residents, young girls at the time, one of which being my grandmother, Wilma A. Schweickhard O'Brien. The newsletter was for the "boys" from the Ionia area that were searving overseas to keep them informed on local happenings and to give them a small piece of home.

The scrapbook I found in my grandmothers house contained all the original issues of the newsletter as well as the correspondence to the editors that was received from the servicemen overseas.
