Many people have sent me e-mail asking if Erector Sets are still made... well, they are! There are various models available, but they are different from the "antique" sets shown on this site. Just search the Amazon.com site for a selection of the sets available.
From the 1949 American Flyer Catalog... $1.75 for a No. 1-1/2 back in '49!
The photo's below show a portion of the carousel I built with one of my 10-1/2 sets (including repro horses that I made)...
...and my Super-6 restoration which is almost completed.
Below are photo's of the #8-1/2 Erector set that I restored as a '96 Christmas gift for my son Ben. He showed a lot of interest in playing with the set that I had as a child, so I decided to restore one for him. A lot of steel wool, WD-40, polish, and many hours of labor (along with help from Nancy and Paul at Pandy's Collectibles) produced the results your see here. The set turned out so well that I started purchasing sets and parts that I discovered at antique stores and flea markets. I now have a small collection of about thirty sets. I currently have several more sets in various stages of restoration...a 1934 green box Super-6 set pictured below, and red box 6-1/2, a 7-1/2, three 8-1/2's and two 10-1/2's. Also pictured below are photo's of a 1941 #8-1/2 set and a 1954 #7-1/2 set that I just finished restoring. I avoid painting parts and boxes whenever possible, but the '41 box pictured below was a basket case! So I repainted it after removing the rust... but I managed to save the original "first set with the whistle" label. I decided to use plywood inserts (thanks to Pandy's!) for the center section of both #8-1/2's for ease in parts removal and replacement so the sets can be played with. The #7-1/2 has reproduction cardboard inserts and looks very much like the day it left the factory.
