From: 10:48 AM Subject: The mazeTo: jmb184@frontiernet.net John, Here are some of the things I have found over the many years I have had the book. Several of these are questions to which I have not found an answer yet. Starting from the beginning: Title page: In the maze on the title page of the book there is a maze in and in the maze are three letters: N, Y, and S. I have no idea what they stand for or if they even relate to the solving of the maze. Directions page: (The following is not on the electronic version) Look at the four hands on the corners of the page. Three are right hands, while the forth (in the upper right) is a left hand. See room 11 for why. Room 5: This question has been brought up before but I thought it should be brought up again. The narrator says that there are "190 doors in this part of the House." after counting the doors in each room and the gate, you arrive at 187 doors (188 if you count the doorway which is bricked up in room 39.) Where are the other two doors? Room 8: This question has puzzled me for quite a while. Why is this room tilted? Note that it is the only room that is. One thing I did notice was the following: look at the bowling pin and the paper with the letter "s" on it. Theses are the only two objects which are positioned as though the room is not tilted. But what does this mean? Room 11: Before I explain about the left hand. I found a series of rooms which, when you enter one of them, you cannot get out. These rooms are 6, 11, 22, 24, 38, 40, and 43. The left hand on the sign in room 11 has a left hand on it which is similar to that of the one on the directions page. This indicates that that path is the wrong way. Room 23: I don't know if this observation means anything, but I found the numbers 1, 2, and 3 stated in the sentences for the room. "a room with three other doors.", "Look at those two trees out there,' one said," By the way, anyone figured out what that sign on the floor means? Room 27: I have found out the message beneath the statue. What it actually says is Fata viam in venient. Fata ? fate, destiny, doom, death. Viam ? way, road, journey. In ? into, about, in the mist of. Venient ? come. Put it together and you get something to the effect of "Doom in the midst of the path to come." Room 37: I think there is something deeper than which room to go to next hidden in this room. Look at what the narrator says to the question "What is going on here?": "Sometimes, important messages are couched in ambiguous terms. . . that net may help you catch the answer to your question." I thought about the net. The net has the shape of a cone. (net ? cone). One die goes with the other (die ? die). The bottle has the same sort of shape as the vase (bottle ? vase). This leaves the sphere or ball. What does this get matched up with? The ladder perhaps? What does this mean though? What do these pairs have to do with anything? Room 40: Look at the symbols in the stone on the right. Among the symbols are the letters T, R, A, and P: Trap! Also notice that this is one of the rooms which have no escape. Room 43: Take the two signs and reverse the spelling. "Keep your self ? Trap." This room also has no escape. Finally, a comment about the shortest path in the maze. I have a problem with the shortest path. (Assuming 16 steps) According to the answer you are supposed to go from 17 to 45 to 23 to 8. Why in room 17 does it say "One should never accept the obvious here" and that the room was hard at work on confusion. This sounds as though you are not supposed to take the logical choice, 45, but take another path instead. Next, in room 23, why does it say "I suggested that we take the door on my right and they realized they had found the door they had been seeking for so long." It makes it sound as though they are supposed to go to room 45 from room 23. I am wondering if the two missing doors come in to play here or maybe you are supposed to take a door which has no room number on it. I haven't had a chance to work this out though to see if this is true though. Finally going from room 37 to 20. When the enter room 20 it says that the ringing stopped when they entered. What ringing? It never started. Room 37 says nothing about ringing. Therefore, I question the shortest path. Well there you go. More questions and a few answers.
